Simple Ways to Deep Clean your Mouth

Posted on 9/13/2015 by Raymond Liu
A man flossing his teeth with dental floss.Every day proper oral hygiene habits are essential to keeping your mouth healthy for many years to come, but sometimes your mouth needs more than just a quick brushing and flossing. If you take the time to deep clean your mouth with these simple steps, you give your mouth a fighting chance against tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can put you at risk for tooth loss, gum tissue loss, and even bone loss down the road. Take the extra few minutes it takes to deep clean your mouth and your oral health will thank you in the long run!

Drink Water
Water is one of the easiest defenses you have when it comes to proper oral health. Drinking it throughout the day can wash away sugar, bacteria, and food debris, all of which can wreak havoc on your oral health if they are left to sit on your teeth. Try to drink water as often as you can throughout the day, especially after consuming sugary or starchy foods to ensure that the debris is removed from your mouth.

Take your Time Flossing

Oftentimes, our daily habits can get rushed. We simply get into a routine and mindlessly rush through an everyday task, such as flossing. Rather than flossing while your mind is pre-occupied, take the time to really pay attention to the areas in between each tooth. Make sure that you are hitting the gum line and that you are flossing on each side of the tooth in each space. Plaque and bacteria build up in every little crevice of your mouth, which means that the floss needs to hit each of those areas if you want to put up a fight against gum disease.

Brush your Teeth Slower

Brushing slower is another habit that likely gets done without a second thought. The next time you brush your teeth, focus on the task. You can even set a time to see how long two minutes really lasts. You might be surprised to see that you are not brushing nearly long enough on an everyday basis. If you can, take 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth; this will ensure that every area and angle of every tooth in your mouth is properly brushed.

Brush Your Tongue

Do you brush your tongue every day? If not, you are leaving many germs behind that can cause a variety of illnesses, bad breath, and gum disease. Take the extra few seconds that it takes to brush your tongue from the rear to the front. This helps to push the germs out of your mouth, rather than further down your throat.

These simple tasks can help to deep clean your mouth. You can perform them as often as you see fit, but the more often you do them, the cleaner your mouth will be. Of course, you should also keep up with your regularly scheduled dental checkups, ideally every six months. This makes it possible to ensure that your teeth are clean and your gums are healthy. If there are any issues, we can catch them early on and avoid invasive treatments. With regular checkups and proper deep cleaning at home, a general cleaning and exam is usually all that is needed. But if you skip those appointments and avoid the daily oral hygiene habits that are necessary for optimal oral health, deeper cleanings, such as a scaling and root planing, and other invasive procedures may need to be done.
