Reasons Teeth May Shift

Posted on 5/5/2015 by Raymond Liu

A woman suffering from her teeth shifting, due to excessive teeth grinding.Everyone wants to have a great set of teeth without any structural imperfections, but despite having a beautiful smile, your teeth may shift, causing a variety of dental problems that causes difficulties for you. There are many reasons that teeth may shift including hereditary issues, cavities, and sleep habits. Once you know why your teeth may shift, you can take the necessary precautions either on your own or while working with us in order to ensure that you have a straight smile for many years to come.

Hereditary Reasons
Your genes play a role in what your teeth do. They not only control how their teeth come in, but what they do for the rest of your life. Even if you think you take proper care of your teeth, you could still be subject to undue shifting. Luckily, there are things we can do in the office that can help to alleviate the damage that shifting does to your teeth. The key is keeping up with your regular dental appointments so that we may catch the shifting early on and elicit the proper treatment for you before the issue gets out of hand. As a part of your treatment, we will discuss your family history with you in order to allow us to have an understanding of what to expect in your mouth, giving us a chance to provide treatment that either prevents or alleviates shifting teeth.

A set of teeth affected by cavities can be one of the biggest factors that could contribute towards teeth shifting. Cavities which are left untreated for a long time are perhaps even more harmful when it comes to shifting. The reason why cavities are so damaging is because of the fact that untreated cavities often damage the gums and result in loosening the teeth from their roots. In the long run, this results in teeth shifting. Of course, the best way to handle this situation is to take good preventative care of your teeth: brush and floss twice a day, drink plenty of water, and watch your consumption of refined sugars and carbohydrates. In addition, however, you need to keep up with your regular dental appointments in order to allow us to catch decay early on.

Excessive Teeth Grinding

There are different ways in which excessive pressure might get applied to the teeth due to grinding. One of the most common ways in which this takes place is by grinding the teeth hard while asleep. Now, it is hardly possible for anyone to control the grinding of teeth while asleep, but constant grinding on a daily basis leads to loosening of the teeth that leads to realignment of the teeth. If your partner tells you that you grind your teeth or you wake up feeling tense or have chronic headaches, teeth grinding could be an issue. We can fit you with a mouth guard that can put an end to the grinding, allowing you to not only feel better, but to eliminate the risk of shifting teeth as well.

There are many reasons that you can suffer from shifting teeth, even if you had orthodontic treatment in the past. The best way to avoid this situation for yourself is to see us on a regular basis. We can compare your baseline x-rays and exams to what is currently going on in your mouth and elicit the proper treatment.

If you think you may be suffering from teeth shifting, please contact us at (425) 310-5789 to schedule your appointment today. There is nothing better than seeking medical help at the outset and taking care of the situation before it gets out of hand.
